In the middle of 2018 I launched the Erase the Filter podcast. My original goal was to produce a weekly show featuring unconventional, experimental, atmospheric, and ethereal music and art. Unexpected personal circumstances immediately following the launch derailed my momentum and after a couple false starts I managed to only publish six episodes (season one) that year.
These episodes were built around a primary artist interview along with one or more bonus segments. I experimented with different elements, like audio collage, field recordings, original scores, and traditional interviews. But I realized during editing that my inspiration to create this podcast was the DIY zine culture of the 80s and 90s, particularly the photocopied collage zines that included everything from record reviews to poetry to interviews to completely random text or images. The format of those old zines was much more open, and the content much more fluid, than the first several episodes of the podcast.
The future of Erase the Filter will still showcase the awesome artists that inspire me, but as the name implies, there will be no rules or constraints. I’m not quite sure where it will go from here and I’m looking forward to being just as surprised as you.
In the meantime here’s a quick and easy way to check out the 2018 season one episodes. Enjoy!
